Dental Health Starts as a Child

Teaching your child proper oral care at a young age is an investment in their lifelong health.

Campi Cares is the philanthropic effort of Campi Dental located in Wall, NJ led by Karen & Cheryl Campi. Created to get involved in the community they schedule numerous forums to speak about overall health and wellness, nutrition, and education throughout the year. The month of February is Children’s Dental Health Awareness Month so they would like to raise awareness about the importance of oral health starting at a young age.

Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. You can start by setting an example; taking good care of your own teeth sends a message that oral health is something to be valued. Anything that makes taking care of teeth fun, like brushing along with your child or letting them choose their own toothbrush, encourages proper oral care.

The best time for a child’s first visit to the dentist is between ages 2 and 3, some care you should take for toddlers is:
  • At about age two, it’s okay to start using fluoride toothpaste—but make sure there’s no swallowing.
  • Want to teach the proper length of time for brushing? Try singing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” or another upbeat favorite for two minutes.
  • Usually by ages three or four, all 20 primary or “baby” teeth have appeared. Permanent, or “adult,” teeth appear by age six and may continue to emerge into the teen years.
  • If you have a toddler who is afraid of the dentist, you might make your little one more comfortable by letting him or her sit in your lap during the exam.

All in the Family Gives Back for Back to School

A large donation of backpacks and school supplies was made to local schools before school started last week to get local children starting the year off right. Numerous people in the Monmouth County area went to Campi Dental Dental in Wall, The Atlantic Club in Manasquan and Campi & Morrison Orthodontics in Red Bank dropping off supplies for those children on the economically disadvantaged list in our area. “This is a great start to a school year but I would like to remind residents that these local families could use our help throughout the year,” said Cheryl Campi, co-founder of Campi Cares. “The schools asked that we collect gift cards to help them with groceries and especially to help support them around the Holiday season. I know so many people want to donate directly to their neighbors so I would like everyone to be aware that there’s always options to help out those near!”

Karen Campi & Cheryl Campi Help to Deliver Backpacks and School Supplies

Erin Campi, RDH is the fourth generation at Campi Dental, a family practice that was opened by her Great Grandfather in 1933 in Asbury Park, NJ. “Our family has been a part of giving back to the Jersey Shore community since 1933 when my Great Grandfather opened All in the Family in Asbury Park. Being able to support the community throughout the year through donations like school supplies, collecting for hurricane victims, going into the schools and doing educational forums, is part of his legacy.” Dr. John G. Campi was a co-founder and past president of the Asbury Park Boys Club, co-founder of the Asbury Park Medical Arts Building, past president of the Monmouth County Dental Society and numerous other organizations. “I count it a special privilege to serve our community in this role” said Erin. “I look forward to establishing lasting relationships with all our patients and hear stories of my great grandfather while supporting our community through drives like these.”

If you want to donate directly to the schools the Principal from Red Bank Primary School, Luigi Laugelli, said,”Something we are always looking for is gently used (it does not have to be brand new) clothing – specifically, khaki pants/shorts/skirts for children in Pre-K through Grade 3 and polo shirts in red, black or white. We have a dress code and these items are often sought out by families. We are grateful for any and all donations and would make sure that whatever we get finds the right home. If you are thinking basic school supplies, glue sticks, pencils, child size scissors and crayons are plenty for our ages.” Campi Dental in Wall NJ will also be collecting gift cards throughout the year and distributing them to the schools they are working with. Campi says, “Come by to drop off your donation, see our office and say hi to us!”

Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and according to the Oral Cancer Foundation, more than 49,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. With advances in modern screening technology, we are now able to pinpoint the start of a potential problem much earlier in its evolution. The ability to do so is extremely important in being able to treat any issues prior to them becoming a major irreversible problem.

An oral cancer screening is often completed with an ultraviolet light or similar device that allows us to view potential problems that can’t always be detected by the human eye under normal conditions.

“Numerous people die each year from oral cancer despite not being exposed to the obvious risk factors: smoking, chewing tobacco, and excessive alcohol intake. The prevalence of the HPV virus makes everyone susceptible. Screening with tools such as Velscope are the most effective diagnostic modalities available today. They make early detection possible. When we can treat the problems small, the treatments are easier and more effective” said, John G. Campi III, DMD.

Early detection can save lives, so all month long Campi Dentale will be helping raise awareness by doing oral cancer screenings at their office and donating $10 per screening to Mary’s Place by the Sea. An appointment is required and can be easily made by calling the office at (732) 449-2228.

Symptoms include persistent red ulcers, sudden tooth mobility without apparent cause, unusual oral bleeding and prolonged hoarseness. Risk factors and certain lifestyle choices can have a great impact on the health of tissues and your overall health in the mouth. If you are a heavy drinker, smoker, have a history of cancer, or have HPV, please get regular screenings when you visit the dentist.

The Doctors at Campi Dental are trained to screen for common oral cancer symptoms and can answer any of your questions on April 12th at 10 am when they go live on Facebook with Mary’s Place by the Sea co-founder, Michele Gannon. They will also be holding an event on April 26th with Mary’s Place by the Sea where you can receive more information on all types of cancers and how you can take part in your healing when diagnosed.
