Breathing Easy: Exploring the Crucial Link Between Airway Health and Quality Sleep
Author: Dr. Greg Campi, Orthodontist & Airway Specialist at Campi Dental
A good night’s sleep is often considered the cornerstone of overall well-being, and one key player in achieving restful nights is often overlooked – our airway health. The intricate relationship between quality breathing and a good night’s sleep is a fascinating yet underexplored topic that deserves our attention. The airways are responsible for delivering the oxygen our bodies need to function optimally, and any disruptions in this process can have profound effects on our sleep patterns.
Airway Health and Sleep Disorders
Poor airway health can be a silent disruptor, leading to sleep disorders such as snoring, sleep apnea, and restless nights. Conditions like sleep apnea, where breathing is briefly and repeatedly interrupted during sleep, not only impact the quality of sleep but also pose serious health risks. Addressing airway health is, therefore, a crucial step in ensuring a restorative and uninterrupted night’s sleep.

The Impact on Overall Well-being
Quality sleep is a prime factor in our physical and mental health. When our airways are compromised, the body may struggle to maintain the deep, restful sleep necessary for healing and rejuvenation. This can lead to daytime fatigue, decreased cognitive function, and even mood disturbances. Recognizing the link between airway health and overall well-being emphasizes the importance of addressing any issues that may be hindering optimal breathing during sleep.
Sleep disorders, specifically in children, can have significant negative effects on their growth and well-being. It’s imperative that children have ideal, peaceful, restorative sleep for proper growth and development. Children who suffer from airway issues and lack of sleep can suffer from delayed development, possible ADHD diagnosis, and reduced IQ’s.
Signs of Airway Issue
- Persistent, loud snoring
- Episodes of gasping or choking during sleep
- Periods of stopped breathing during sleep
- Daytime sleepiness
- Dry mouth or sore throat after sleeping
- Morning headaches
- Trouble focusing during the day
Enhancing Airway Health for Quality Sleep
Fortunately, there are various strategies to enhance airway health and, consequently, improve the quality of sleep. Anyone who has already been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and/or uses a CPAP machine can improve their airway function through a recommended treatment plan along with lifestyle modifications such as maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking, and managing allergies. In most cases, our airway treatments result in the patient no longer needing to use their CPAP devices. To determine if a treatment plan is necessary, we perform a series of analyses, starting with a sleep questionnaire. If fitting, we would then recommend a home sleep screening and perform a CBCT Scan to analyze the structure of the airway. If treatment is necessary, we begin to resolve the airway issues through orthopedic and orthodontic corrections and/or sleep appliance treatment.
The significance of airway health in promoting quality sleep should not be underestimated in both children and adults. As we become more attuned to the rhythm of our breathing, we empower ourselves to take proactive steps toward improving our overall well-being. By recognizing and addressing airway issues, we pave the way for nights filled with deep, rejuvenating sleep – a gift that keeps on giving to our health and vitality. So, let’s start breathing easy and embracing the crucial link between airway health and the foundation of a good night’s sleep.
